Roses

For centuries the beauty and fragrance of the Rose has opened the hearts of many. It is the flower we offer in celebration or to show how much we care, and is recognized worldwide as a symbol of ones love.

Susan Zalkind Alabaster Carver has an affinity for embodying the essence and mystery of the Rose.

Commemorate your 37th Wedding Anniversary
With an Alabaster Rose or Flower Carving

The Rose blossoms from a single stone in the hands of the carver, light illumines its soft, flowing and colorful petals and at that moment time stands still, the eternal Rose is born.  These Alabaster flowers by Susan Zalkind truly last forever.

Alabaster is the only material that can express a Rose, catching it as if it were trembling on a breeze. It's infinite and unpredictable coloration, translucency and softness bring the timeless forces under which the Alabaster was formed to life for the viewer.

"The Lavendar-Mauve Alabaster Rose"
2010 - 17"h x 10"w x 8"d

The “Lavender-Mauve Rose” is carved from a rare one time find in San Diego’s Anza-Borrego Desert.  The Rose itself, a single stone carving, is the largest I’ve carved and is approx. 4” High X 6” in Diameter.  The leaves are carved from the rarest of Green Alabasters and are structurally arranged into branches that dissemble for shipping.  The base upon which the carving is built is a rare Grey and White Striped Alabaster.  This is my 20th Rose in 37 years of carving.

"Alabaster Bouquet" - A multi-colored Stone Flower Carving.
2012 - 14"h x 13"w x 12"d

Rare and translucent Pinks, Purples, Reds, Orange, White and Green Alabasters inspired these flowers to be carved.  The hand carved Alabaster flowers’ Green Alabaster stems and leaves grow out of a translucent White Alabaster bowl mounted on a fascinating and singular piece of Desert Ironwood Root Burl Wood.  The flowers, stems and leaves of this singular piece dissemble for easy shipping.

The Golden Pink Sunset Rose
2009 - 20"h x 13"w x 12"d

The Golden Pink Sunset Rose is carved from the rarest of delicately translucent and colored Alabasters of the softest pinks and shaded greens. Both the full bloom Rose and bud are single stone carvings, sculpted from a extraordinary discovery in the California desert mountains, a place now completely unavailable for prospecting.

Gathered in the wilds of Utah, found in a vanishing vein that one could not even call 'a deposit', the leaves are carved from the rarest of green Alabasters and are structurally arranged into branches. The Golden Pink Sunset Rose is my nineteenth Rose sculpture in 35 years of carving.

Datura Flowers
24"h x 30"w x 20"d

Each of the 7 flowers, weighing under a pound, was carved from a single nodule weighing over 40 lbs of the White Arizona Alabaster.  Carved from the rare Green Utah Alabaster, each of the leaves was individually carved and built up on the 7 branches. The 21 Brazilian Agate Anthers, 3 issuing from the centers of each flower, were hand carved. The branches are mounted onto a covered Black and White hand carved Alabaster bowl.

The flowering plant 'Datura' is honored amongst indigenous peoples worldwide for its beauty and powerful hallucinogenic properties. Shamans use it as a psychotropic portal into the collective unconscious. Georgia O'Keefe painted 'Datura' but as far as I know it's never been carved from stone – certainly not Alabaster.

The life sized full bloom was carved from a single stone of the pure White Alabaster. It was the only 'Plein aire' Rose I ever carved! As in my other Rose carvings, the leaves are individually carved from the rarest of Green Alabasters and built into branches structurally engineered to assemble and dissemble. The sculptural support for the long stemmed Rose is carved from same White Alabaster from which the bloom is carved.

The sculptural support for the long stemmed Rose is carved from same White Alabaster from which the bloom is carved. This was the 16th Rose I'd carved in my career since 1976 and the first of the long stemmed Roses.

Lavender Alabaster Rose
1996 - 15"h x 10"w x 7"d

The full bloom is carved from a single stone of one of the rarest Alabasters we've ever found – the Lavender. It's also the largest Rose I've ever carved. The bloom itself is almost 6" in Diameter and 4" High. The leaves are individually carved from the rare Green Alabaster and built up on branches that are structurally reinforced with brass rods. The leaves and Rose, mounted on a beautiful hand carved pink sculptural vessel, dissemble – which is how the piece was built and which is how the piece is shipped.
