I spent my high school years drawing ugly faces, I mean really ugly, pimples and all. Of all the kids in the class, my high school art teacher let me do whatever I wanted (I don’t know why). I drew ugly faces and flowers. Now I carve them! Who knew?
After a few years of carving I said “I wish I knew how to carve faces”. Revelation! I realized I already knew. Those high school years involved with drawing faces behind piled books to hide from the teacher were not a waste! My face carvings have become one of my main genres. In stone they morph from ugly to elegant, especially inlaid with gemstone eyes. Some I call them my ‘Buddha Faces'.
When you think about it, where do you ever see contemporary carved stone faces? To me, nothing could be more elegant than faces carved in stone. These pieces are tranporational! (new word!)
